| Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge |
 |
China's first bridge over the Yangtze River, built in Wuhan. 1100
meters long and 80 meters high, completed in 1957 as one of the achievements
of the "Big Leap", the bridge connected Wuchang and Hanyang
and made China's Beijing/Guangzhou railroad - China's economic vein
a reality. It is new China's first engineering success, though with
some help from former Soviet Union. It is often mentioned with the
one in Nanjing, which was completed later and totally built by the
communist Chinese government without any help from outside.
A second Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge was built in 1996, linking
Wuchang and Hankou. At the end of 2001, Wuhan's 4th bridge over
the Yangtze is complete and put into operation.
So nowadays the people in Wuhan call the bridge "1st Bridge",
to differ other news ones. "1st bridge" is still the largest
and most comprehensive (with rail way). |
