Donglin Academy (Donglinshuyuan)

After Yan Shi left WuXi some people built a Dao Nan Temple to commemorate him.It was recorded that when Yan Shi finished his studies and came back to Southern part where was his hometown,Cheng Yi praised him as the words:"My doctrines will remove in southern part."After 1129,in more than 400 years,Donglin Academy fell into disuse.In 1604 of Ming dynasty,Gu Xiancheng,Gao Panlong,Gu Yuncheng and others contributed money to rebuild Donglin Academy on the side of the former.In Nan Temple to commemorate him.It was recorded that when Yan Shi finished his studies and came back to Southern part where was his hometown,Cheng Yi praised him as the words:"My doctrines will remove in southern part."After 1129,in more than 400 years,Donglin Academy fell into disuse.In 1604 of Ming dynasty,Gu Xiancheng,Gao Panlong,Gu Yuncheng and others contributed money to rebuild Donglin Academy on the side of the former.In late Ming Dynasty Donglin Academy was well-known for the time.It became the center of knowing public sentiment well of the country.At that time Gu Xiancheng ,Gao Panlong,Gu Yuncheng,An Xifan and other officials who had the real ability and learning had been dismissed by the court.They returned to WuXi,their home,early and later. There is a famous couplet of Donglin Academy and it reads:"Listen to every sound of the wind, the rain and the reading; Care for every event of the family,the nation and the would." This couplet express Gu Xiancheng's active attitude toward his studies and administering a country.Gu Xiancheng,Gao Panlong,Gu Yuncheng,An Xifan,Liu Yuanzhen, Yie Maocai who came from WuXi and Qian Yiben,Xue Fujiao who came from WuJin were called "Eight Gentlemen of Donglin."In 1962,vice-chairman of the country Dong Biwu visited Donglin Academy ,and wrote a poem in his own hand.It reads:We will carry on giving lectures as Gui Shan. Gao Panglong and Gu Xiancheng's fame will spread far and wide.The old Gentlemen's strength of character will be respected and admired.Face to the famous couplet the determination of learning them will never be shakable."When you are pacing up and down in the courtyard of Donglin Academy ,looking up at the green pines,walking into the old temple and facing to the pictures of the old Gentlemen , you will think more and more things.
