| Ge Yuan - Ancient Chinese Garden of Yangzhou |
 |
Yangzhou's other famous small garden is called the Ge Yuan, and is
famous for two things - its excellent collection of different types
of bamboo and a garden design based on the four seasons of the year.
Constructed at the start of the 19th century, it is much more traditional
than the He Yuan. Its builder, a wealthy Yangzhou salt merchant, especially
loved bamboo and planted many different varieties of bamboo around
the garden. The different bamboos are especially striking together
with the garden's rock formations, since the twisted gray rocks make
an interesting contrast with the different shapes and shades of color
of the bamboos. The overall layout of the garden is designed to look
evoke the four seasons. Instead of directly representing the seasons,
the plants and rocks and pavilions are laid out to evoke different
mood appropriate to the seasons, and is laid out in a circle to mirror
the progress of the year through the different seasons. |
