Rongbuk Monastery (at elevation 4800 meters ) is one of the highest
monasteries in the world. It is also the last inhabited spot before
Everest Base Camp, about 7 km distant. From Rongbuk Monastery the
huge north face of Everest is clearly seen. Rongbuk Monastery is situated
15 kilometres below Everest Base Camp and was reconstructed after
the excesses of the Cultural Revolution in the 1960's.
